have a set of jumper cables made up with the pigtails and I think it would work ok if you let it run awhile to charge the dead bat before trying to start it , or just pull the seat and go streight to the bat

Switch on, put it in second gear, hold the clutch, then push it at running speed. Jump into the seat and pop the clutch.
How does that work with fuel injected bikes?

Not at all. The battery must have power to run the pump and injectors or it will not start. EFI killed the push start. I have jumped a bike from a car batttery, just make sure that the car is not running at the time.

I did that with my Electraglide. Pushed it down the hill, dumped the clutch in 2nd gear. Then walked back up the hill and got the truck and jumper cables.

If you still have power, but not enough to spin the starter, then push starting is a viable option if you can get the bike going fast enough.

If your battery is dead enough so that your lights don't even glow dimly, then your only options are to jump start the bike, recharge the battery, or get a new battery.

Push a 900 lb bike in second gear fast enough to jump on with a tour pack?....I'd rather make my first jump out of a C-130 again......

I used the clip on leads that came with the tender and made a set of jumper cables to plug in to my battery pig tail. Put a thermal breaker in place of the fuse. They are not heavy enough to jump a completely dead bike. I plugged in to my bike and used them to charged a buddies bike that had a battery too low to crank. After about 10 min at idle, it charged enough to start his bike with no problem. If you make a set, be sure to keep the polarity correct.

[quote=twincam47;10975660]for a jump start...go straight to the lug on the starter. Just pull the rubber boot back, be careful not to touch the positive jumper cable to your bike, and find a nice ground on the bike for the negative cable. Works like a charm.[/quote

This is how my Dealer does it, they say it is the recommended way. Pigtail will not tote the load. I had thought about making up a trolling motor battery hookup from the battery to a handy connector to handle more load, but I will just use the way listed above if the need comes along. I personally think jumping off from a car battery, if you are in a bind, is OK if the car is not running. Rolling off an EFI bike with a dead battery probably a no go...

Surely it's no more than taking 1 screw out, slide the saddle and bob's your uncle?

I've jumped mine at the starter. Works quite well. Watch out after you get it started the exhaust gets warm pretty quick.
