Problem is I have problems with "vision" . I can't visualize things very well, just know cool when I see it.

So, there are two levels to the rocker boxes? You say this is a bit involved...too involved for an amateur with a manual?

Lastwinter was my first venture into taking this thing apart, bought a manual and pulled a lot of parts off (to take to a local powder coater) and changed out the bars. Learned a lot, but was still too intimidated to tackle easing with motor stuff.

I'm slowly doing black too and I have the same problem????

Not really a big deal but ya do need to pull the rockers and stands to get the bottom piece/cover off.

I really don't think you'll have any trouble doing the primary, cam, trans top & side, rocker covers. Just use the manual and take your time. Good Luck!

I had the engine parts coated in a textured black to match the engine. The front end is a semi gloss black, the crash bars are textured ( easy to get bugs off ) and the rest is gloss. You can see it all in my sig pic. The D&D pipes were ordered black.

I am in the "blacking out" process as well. I will keep little bits of chrome here and there. I don't have a recent pic yet so don't judge the sig pic. LOL!! Here's a link to an ebay guy I get parts from quite a bit. Hope it helps.

Few things. If you want the engine covers to match the actual motor tell your powder coat guy you want hd texture black not wrinkle. They have both. The wrinkle black is a little different. When I did mine and when friends ask for suggestions I tell them for the most part to do anything tied to the motor in texture and anything tied to the frame in gloss. On my road glide, my forks, engine guard, foot controls, and passenger pegs are all gloss. I also did my console and turn signals in gloss to add contrast against the black denim paint. Primary, both tranny covers, cam covers, and rocker box uppers are all texture black. The only thing I did that is kind of tied to the frame, but not gloss are the saddle bag supports. I did those in black magic which is real close to denim black. I wanted them to kind of disappear. If my bike had the supports with bag guards I would have done them in gloss. For me using this approach lends to your eye being uninterrupted as you look at the bike. Makes things look like one continuous piece if that makes sense.

We are more than happy to help you with these parts, right now we have about a week or 2 turn around on most black parts, i think you will find that this beats pretty much any coaters turn around. We also stock a set of rockers for exchange this way you can do the swap in one sitting and not have to wait on parts to return. Personally with your bike i would go gloss on everything. We offer a Engine package for $100 that includes the outer primary, cam cover, and clutch cable cover. We specialize in Harley parts. So every mating surface is properly masked, plug areas are plugged, and threads are either freshly tapped before you get the parts or properly masked so that assembly is as simple as possible
here are some pics!

Ok...you had to throw that red in there because you knew I wouldn't be able to pass that up ....question with doing it all in gloss, especially the primary, does that look funky with all that gloss right up against the textured case?

man, i think a little of that red mixed in would look pretty cool with the color of the flames (if we could match)....maybe i do have a little vision (with a little help)

thanks,
sv

personally i do not think it looks bad at all, if you want to tear off the inner primary we can do that in gloss as well... but here are some customer pics we have of customers (also HDF members) that have done the outer and not the inner

And the cool thing is you're in Elgin. I'm up north route 31 in Fox River Grove. 15 / 20 mins away. Is your turn around on walk ins bout the same? 2 weeks(ish)? Not that I would expect same day. But I'm wondering since I can come see you easily, it cuts away shipping time of course.
