Thats the nice option with the King, you can do pretty much what you want and it's all good. If you are doing that long ride the comfort and tunes of the fairing cannot be beat and on a hot day strip er down and you are good to go. Myself I'd go with the fairing....
I'm somewhat in the same boat as the OP, except I have bought a like new Memphis Shades batwing used, and a pair of early 90's lowers with aftermarket vents added off the internet this winter.
I really like the lowers and put 750 some miles on Friday and Saturday with them on the Road King. Really wishing I would have slipped the fairing on before I left on that ride, but just left the stock windshield in place.
I am now in the process of trying to get paint to match my 2003 100th Anni. Sterling Silver to paint this stuff and it is a un-available item from a Harley dealer.
I will agree with the fact that a RK can be so many different bikes with the addition or subtraction of a few QD parts.
