The bike comes with an unlimited mileage and 2 year warranty. When the dealer pushes an extended warranty I know for a fact it's in their best intrest. Questions that go through my mind when asked if I want one is; Why do I need one, is the product that unreliable? Why do I save the 150 surcharge by buying now, it doesn't kick into action until the factory warranty runs out anyway? If at the end of the 2 year factory warranty my bike isn't stock, will I still be fully covered? How many major repairs on the bike cost over $2000? If I sell the bike does the extended warranty carry over to the new owner?
Keep in mind that often the extended warranty is wrapped together with a maintenance contract, be sure you seperate the services in your mind so that you know exactly what you are paying for in the maintenance and the extended warranty. Keep in mind that if you are not paying cash for the bike, then wrapping these extras in with your financing is making them cost more.
I purchased the 7 year unlimited mile plan on my o7 SE Ultra, I Just retired and plan on riding alot of miles. I come from the auto industry and feel this plan is a real value for piece of mind. 7 years is a long time and the fact that it covers seals, and electricals is hug. If this bike goes the whole 7 years without a problem, I am happy to let Harley keep the insurance money. I also own a Corvette, I purchase a factory Extended Plan on the Corvette and it saved me when the rear axle shaft seal went out. The one repair saved me the cost of the plan.
I paid $999.00 for an additional 3 years above and beyond the existing 2 year warranty. It's transferable, so if i sell or trade I think it was wise. For what I paid for the bike and will end up paying in upgrades and bling, it's cheap comfort...
As a holder of a seller's license, I can assure you thatmuch of the cost of the extended warranty is profit for the seller (read: negotiate and shop around). In addition, the buyer is agreeing to have repairs done by personnel who aren't necessarily qualified - let's not go there (read: do you know the guy who works on your bike?). Finally, their labor rates are inflated to the tune of 25% over other HD-trained independent mechanics (read: the guys who work with and for YOU!). YMMV.
I have the seven year extended warranty with tire|wheel care, taking the warranty to 9 years for my 07 UC. I shopped around the D.C. area and the cheapest was $1850.00, presented that quote to my dealer. They honored it, therefore the shopping around saved me $300.00
I have an '04 Fatboy purchased 12-03. I got a 7 year extended service plan with tire and wheel coverage. It has 3 years 10 months to go. I have never had a problem with it. I have made so many modifications to it I wonder how much is left of the original bike to be covered underthe planor what the addiiton of all that stuff has done to the service plan's validity. I am thinking of selling it back. I paid $1350 for it and would get around $740 back today.
I bought an '05 Road King Custom in Aug 04. Never hada problem with it under warranty either. Never got the extended service plan. A few months after the warranty expired the voltage regulator stud broke. Harley offered to cover it under warranty for $150 "out of warranty fee". Didn't cost that much to fix the stud so I declined and just had it repaired.
I just bought a used '07 Ultra with 280 miles on it. It has a 4 year extended service plan with tire and wheel coverage that cost the owner $1299 (foronly 24 months past the factory warranty). Given the track record of the other two bikes (less than $100 in warranty eligible repairs) I am wondering if it is worth keeping also. I would get about $1225 back today. That's $1965 total including the Fatboy.
By the way the extended service plan on the Fatboy comes out to $16/mo and the Ultra to$27/mo. The pricing on these service plans seems to be all over the board and I guess the dealers just charge what they can get.
Thanks guy's, I called the dealer and he told me for a 3 year it's $1298 and for a 5 year it's $1898 including the tire and wheels coverage. I'm going to call around like Badass suggested to find out if I can bring that price down. Thanks for all the input.
