I have the '06 Ultra and the standard warranty will run out in October of this year. I do not plan to get the extended warranty. HD makes money on these things, you know? It's all a game of chance. I figure that in the first two years I have most of the bugs shaken loose and the ones that aren't either I can handle myself or the cost won't be as high as what the warranty extension price is. On top of that, the older the bike gets, the higher the likelihood that you will be doing mods that will "void" the warranty anyway. (And we all know the stealers do whatever they can to find something that will void the warranty - but that's another discussion...)
It's like going to Vegas. By not betting I'm keeping the odds in my favor but there is still a chance I might lose.
I'd save my money and not go with any extended warranty on anything including your Harley. Of course you could be lucky or unlucky however you want to look at itand be the 1 out of a 100 that actually makes out byhaving one.
I have a '05 rk custom. The standard warranty ends in October. I have been thinking about the extended warranty myself, just for peice of mind. I will make my mind up then. Good luck with your decision.
I too prefer the piece of mind. I have it on my Ultra, didn't get it on the Wife's deuce, we put tons of miles on the Ultra and the Deuce doesn't get ridden all that much. I think if it was computer controlled and fuel injected I wouldn't have done it but I don't have the diagnostic stuff to do heavy work on it.
I agree with oldfartjc, Insurance is always a bet against yourself. I never buy the extended warrenty on anything and ( knock on wood) have come out ahead. So far on my 03 Ultra, I have had to spend out of pocket, what would have been covered by warrenty $300.00 in 31,000 miles. My buddy Dave, however, buys the warrenty and really has needed it on his 05 Ultra having had the crank burned up at 50,000 miles plus other assorted repairs through out the time he has had the bike. I guess it is dependent on how hard you ride and how many miles you put on your bike how you should bet with your insurance money.
