Default Dropping my warranty

I recently purchased a 2014 Super Glide Custom with 7500 miles, and opted to pay $1800 for a two year warranty. However, since thinking about it, I have decided to drop the warranty. I intend to make modifications, and do most of the work myself...so I don't want to get shafted on the warranty. In addition, I've only used a warranty once in the last twenty years, and that repair wouldn't have cost nearly as much as buying the warranty. I realize that it could pose a risk, but would like to hear what other members think about the issue.

Warranty is you betting the bike will go wrong and them betting it won't.

So -

A] do you expect the bike to go wrong or does it "feel" right?
B] do you expect any faults from [A] to cost more that $1800 to make right?

If A is "no, feel right" then drop the warranty.
If B is "less than" then drop the warranty

C] if it does go wrong then I am able to do most of the fixes myself - yes/no

If C is yes then drop the warranty.

Warranty is for "peace of mind" - if you don't need the peace or are capable of "enhancing your own peace" then drop the warranty.
If you feel the need for the warranty then keep it and do the mods after it runs out (or drop it if you really want to do them now... most mods will auto-invalidate the warranty) (that depends on if it's a HD warranty or a private company "insurance-style" warranty)

All of your points are what brought me to my conclusion. This was my fourth purchase in the last few years, so I considered myself prepared for the pushy salesmanship. However, it took about a half hour to convince him that I didn't want the two year...$2200..."general service plan". I can't imagine paying nearly $100 per month for fluid changes. They never, ever give up though. Listening to the finance guy, you'd think he was bending over backwards to do me all of these favors, but in my opinion it's all a racket. Of course the warranty is for unlimited mileage, and of course they'd like for me to ride as many miles as is possible...more money for their service department. Same with the HOG patches. The bottom line is that I am like some of the other members here...I love the motorcycles, but am not very fond of the company's business practices.

$2200 can go a fair distance in maintaining a motorcycle.

Especially if the best mechanic is doing the work...

I wouldn't worry about it as long as you in a financial position to take care of anything out of pocket. Its great piece of mind for those that arent

Paying $1800 to cover for two years something that MIGHT go wrong?

Of course the F&I guy is going to push these products- they are very profitable for the dealership. Up to 50% of the retail price of the plans is commissions.

Take the $1800 and instead put it aside. There is your money to fix repairs for the next couple years.

At the end of the 2 years, it's quite likely you'll have all of or at least some of that money left.

The sales guys spend all that time telling you how great the bike is, and the back office guys scare you into the horrors of what could go wrong.

I personally can afford to pay out of pocket for this stuff- so far in the past 4 years and 31,000+ miles, I've spent almost $120 on such repairs.

I bought my last bike with 24000 miles when the sales dude said 1800 $$ for 3 years unlimited miles I jumped on board and it was the best decision ever for me. We ride 20000 up 25000 miles a year. So far 2 comp sprokets and a complete engine and tranny overhaul at 50000 miles. Main crank bearing fried. $7900 for motor and tranny work.. fork tubes seals ++.. Warrenty just ran out at 89000 on the date. Keeping my fingers crossed and hopeing I get 2 mores years from this bike.

Peace of mind is a great thing and there are plenty of people who have had their bacon saved by them.

If they weren't making money on them they wouldn't offer them, or they'd cost a lot more than they do now.

I purchased one.... Just not from the MOCO. But then again I ride 20-25K miles a year and I bought a 2017 M8 so its a first gen and if there is one issue then my ESP will cover the cost!

I think mine was $1300 for 5 years beyond the stock warranty.

I would contact Jim Palmer if you would like a warranty but not pay through the nose. If you ride a lot of miles then it may be worth it to you. If you are a low mileage rider then put the money in your savings account and you will have money for most basic repairs if they are needed. Jim sells and works out of a dealer. There is quite a few threads on the forum to people whom have used this plan with no problems.

Under Jims plan upgrades are also covered.

Best of luck to you either way!
