Has anyone else had troubles with the clear plastic shielding around Magnum's Sterling Chromite II cables? Last spring I installed clutch and brake upper/lower cables as part of a 14" ape install. Initially I thought they looked great. After a summer of riding and a few months of winter storage, I today found that an 8 inch section of the clutch cable clear shielding is frayed and coming off, and the upper brake cable is faded and hazy.
I've read nothing but good things about Magnum's cables on this site, so I was surprised and disappointed with what I found when I got the bike out. I contacted Magnum, and am waiting for a reply.
Just curious if anyone has seen something similar. I'm hoping it's an anomaly and perhaps Magnum will replace.
I just put them on my bike, so I wouldn't know of any issues yet but I thought I read some where that those casings were guaranteed not to discolor. I would just contact them and fine out. Let us know what they have to say for future reference.
My clutch cable did the exact same thing. Mine are HD Diamondbacks but I read on this forum I think that they are made by Magnum for HD. Mine started splitting after about 5K miles and now at 15K is worn all the way through the steel braiding to the inner core.
Same problem here. The clear coating on my clutch cable wore off where the cable contacts the clamp on the nacelle/light bar stud. Ended up peeling away right down to the braided steel which eventually rusted. Also, if you get anywhere near the cables with a pressure washer it will cut right through the clear coating. The cables fit and function great, but the clear coating on them is absolute garbage. I do not plan on using them in the future.
Funny thing is this is a section above the nacelle stud, not touching anything. Almost like dry rot. Odd since they are new. I'll post what Magnum has to say.
Mine look like crap! Big time! And good luck getting Magnum to do anything! I tried the nice approach and they gave a crap less. It wasn't real bad to begin with however it's real bad now. WILL NOT USE AGAIN.
Good Luck.
