Default 2007 FLHT belt pulley changes

i have a 2007 FLHT have 3 years ago now dropped 2 teeth on my primary belt pulley. made 6th gear much much more friendly but 1st gear now just a formality as it is so short. what i am wondering is is there a rear belt pulley i could install to maybe split the difference? maybe a tooth or 2 bigger on the rear pulley? ( i think i am thinking about that the right way) i had to change my belt when i changed front pulley ideally if i can change rear pulley i woul dlike to use same belt for obvious reason of if i have to change belt may as well just change out front pulley again any info or ideas be gladly appreciated thansk id advance

There are several threads (search is your friend) on using the Sporster 68 tooth rear sprocket w/o having to change the belt which I have done and like. With you changing the front sprocket I don't know if the shorter belt your using would work.

Having ridden through the Alps and Vosges Mountains and endless hairpin bends, I know the benefit of a decent low first gear! Is yours really so bad? Have you tried pulling away in second, when the gradient is friendly?

So you made the gear ratio higher (more low end), and now its to high so you want to lower it (more top end) but not as low as stock? If that's the case, you do not want to add teeth to the rear pulley! That will just make your gear ratio even higher and 1st gear even shorter. You would want to get a rear pulley with less teeth...

Your bike comes with a 32F 66R pulley for a 2.063 ratio.
You now have a 30F 66R for a 2.200 ratio.
A 30F 65R gives you a 2.167 ratio (in between stock and what you have now)
A 30f 64R gives a 2.133 ratio (in between stock and what you have now)
If you go to 30F 62R you are back almost at the stock ratio 2.067

I do not know what belt will work with what, but the take-away from this is that you should put a 65/64 tooth rear pulley if you want it to be in between stock and what you have now. If they sell a 65 tooth rear pulley, it is more likely to fit your current belt because its only a 1 tooth drop, the downside is it makes less difference.

I'm guessing you bought the bike used as you've only had it 3 years. I don't think that 2 teeth on the front pulley would make 1st gear seem as bad as you say. Is it possible the previous owner already changed the rear pulley? If it's a 68 then it has been changed. Go back to the stock 66T.

Correct. It will also improve response in all gears. Not huge but noticeable.

I have a Baker DD6 with the stock 25th compensating sprocket. First to third only get about 40mph out of it but being I run a HD sidecar total weight when packed up around 1,600 pounds I really like it.

The standard front for 2007 to 2008 is 32 and rear 66 for a final drive ratio of 2.79. The standard for 2009 up is 32/68 for 2.875 ratio. The 30 front and 68 rear gives you a 3.067. This calculates to a 9% difference on the 07/08. The stock gearing at 3000 rpms give 82 mph in 6th. the 32/68 is 78.6 mph for 6.25% change. the 30/68 gives about 75 mph. These calculations take into consideration the 07/08 has .4" taller tire on rear. Son in law has 2012 FLHTK with the 30/68 and TW 555 and power duals. On the interstate the thing is unbelievable. It will stretch the slack out of the front forks at 70 in 6th. Cruising 55 to 60 in 6th no problem. It is an absolute ball to ride. It will accelerate as low as 2000 rpms in any gear. You can ride in 5th gear in town 35 to 45 no problem. Sure saves lots of shifting. Another friend has a 08 ultra SE with TW 777 cams and Rinehart true duals and stock gearing and it doesn't like to cruise in 6th slower than 70 mph. As far as MPG goes both the 777 and 555 beat my stock (not for long) 2010 FLHTK.
