Default Transmission/crankcase common?

I can't see how the motor oil and the transmission oil are kept separated. I never really thought about it until yesterday when I was working on a transmission oil leak. I had the shop manual out and got to looking at the pan and couldn't figure out how the two systems are separated. The baffle shown is the only thing that looks like it may play a role. Probably a dumb question, but I can't see how it works.

The engine crankcase and transmission case are completely separate pieces, just bolted together. No oil passes between them. The oil pan for the engine oil is attached to the bottom of the transmission, but does not share fluid with the transmission.

The drain screw for the transmission, while located on the pan, actually just plugs a passageway that goes through the wall of the oil pan and up into the transmission. It never mixes despite the perception that they're from the same place.
