I personally think the key here is how hard you push on it. When you push up in there you really do not get the same fill as when cover is off. I know with the Harley automatic adjuster it is actually down to 1/2" play and there is two little coil springs in there that actually make it look like it's 3/8 unless you push hard. I think as long as you push snug and still have your 5/8" or so you are fine. Be sure when you do it for the first time to have rear wheel off ground and plugs out so you can turn it 360 to make sure you do not have enough run-out to drop below 1/2" May surprise you. Mine has 40K and a little uneven chain wear that makes it appear to have a lot of runout. I took it all apart to try to get some runout out. Probably ought to check it again blazing hot also since the motor transmission grow longer then chain and it actually gets tighter when hot. I made a gage out of a piece of white plastic covered wire with the limits marked on it. I put it up in there and it stops on the chain. The I push on the chain and as long as the gap between the mark stays on the window edge I am fine. Mine really has not changed any in 40K. Not sure why Harley says to inspect it as often as they do. Guess just feeding their dealers.

It is most likely your chain has a tight spot somewhere, so you should slowly turn the primary round to find it, then check it at that spot. Disconnect your battery before starting any work in the primary! Jack the rear wheel up enough to turn it over by hand, in top gear.
