Default HD Adjustable Backrest - fit on 08 touring stinks!

I searched the forums and did not see much mention of the problem I'm having with the HD adjustable backrest kit (for 97-08 touring models).

I recently picked up this kit to install on my 08 that's fitted with the HD one-piece seat (has the slit between rider and passenger for backrest and has black/chrome studs across the top just in front of the slit opening).

I mounted the adjustable bracket mechanism as per installation instructions. I then put the seat on to check the fit and the mechanism rubs hard against the front portion of the slit opening (the end of the spring sticks out from the mechanism and I'm afraid it will poke a hole in the seat material).

Then when I inserted the backrest in to the bracket mechanism I found that the backrest pad bracket also presses hard against the slit opening, so much so that it distorts the positioning of the studs and actually rubs against them. It seems like the top of the bracket mechanism needs to be lower and further back for it to work for me.

Has anyone had this issue? All info from Harley seems to indicate that this thing should work for my setup, but it really sucks. I'm thinking I'm going to have to modify the adjustable bracket or make a new one, then reshape the backrest pad bracket.

Thanks in advance.

Yup I made the mistake of buying that without doing any research on it. You would think it going on an expensive bike someone somewhere would take ownership of the form, fit and finish....ridiculous

I had some issues with mine on 2010 model. I cut the spring down with a grinder and then put some type of rubber goop on the end of the spring for good measure. Then I had some scrap leather so I cut piece to cover the bracket so it wouldn't show once the seat was put on. Definitely not what I had I mind when I made the purchase.

I did the same thing with my Ultra Classic.

I noticed the same thing where it was pushed down against the seat. My backrest (from a 98 and Older Kit) has a height adjustment in it. That solved the problem where it pressed down against the seat.

I have been meaning to take it of and slot the holes so I can move it back slightly fora better fit.

I had the same problem. I could hardly get my seat on, and if I did the bracket stuck up higher than the seat. I sold it and bought Mustang backrest.
