I remember in the days of being around big rigs, its kind of the same as bikes, who can make more power. I do remember trucks that had more gears had less hp! If anyone is running decent torque especially 100+ you dont need more gears.

I don't NEED more gears but it would be good to know I had a solid tranny with the baker name behind it. Not that I expect the factory one to fail. but if it does I will have the baker gear set. but I wont pay $2700. I will get a discount from somewhere.
I am wrong, I stand corrected, I always assumed the 6speed was a overdrive Tranny, Harley even calls it the 6 speed cruise drive. What kind of marketing crap is that
Looked in my service manual and yes 6th gear is 1:1 my bad
Still 7 gears no overdrive? 2700.00
No worries. It took me quite a bit of digging to understand what was going on with transmissions for HD's. Jims, Baker and HD (Screaming Eagle) have 6 speed Overdrive transmissions. Baker is the only one I know of with a 7 speed.
My understanding is that the Direct Drive (1:1) transmissions have about 99% power transfer to the rear where an Overdrive transmission only has about a 92% transfer of power to the rear. I really don't fully understand what that all equates to but it is the reason stock bikes have the Direct Drive and not an OD.

That's what I love about this forum I learns stuff everyday.....able to do my own repairs, save $$$$, and make friends along the way.
I can't understand why they would make a 7 speed gearset with without a overdrive....why, why, why
All the big HP makers I have talked to said stay with the stock unit.
While the trans mentioned all have a direct top, they are also over-geared. That is to say the overall gearing is very high, giving the same effect as an over-drive. Even the stock 5-speed trans on Evos and TC88s is over-geared.
