I put the King on the freeway for the first time this morning, got to 70 and clucked 6th. I swear I heard some rattling and clanking going on...possibly primary chain chatter? Is 70 to slow for 6th? I had read reports that Harley way over geared these. I gave it some gas in 6th going 70 to try and get some noise. No appreciable noise, but sure didn't accelerate worth a damn. Drop to 5th and zoom! Sound right?
No...You just got a noisey one. Mine does it in 5th through the whole RPM range. I can hit 6th gear and is quiet even down to around 1800 rpms. Not a whole lot you can do about it but learn to live with it for now. Welcome to the world of thegreat quality of the american made harley davidson!
I have the same deal as Fox except I have it in 6th also but I can barely hear it now with the wind and stereo. Put some decent fluid in it and that may help.

Have you had the tourque smoothing re-map done? It made a world of difference to mine...
Get the remap done if it hasn't been done yet, change to Mobil 1 V inengine Mobil 1 gear in Trans. 70 is fine for 6 th, 65 is too slow. This is what I did and at 2500 miles 6th is smooth (little noise) but 5th is still rattling a little, better than before though, think5th is getting better with miles. Dont count on the noise going away completely.cut of the gears are the cause.Still deciding what oil to put in the primary, doubt this will help with the noise though.
I have to say that the torque mapping did help mine some. I also changed the pipes and did the PCIII, pipe and air cleaner deal. With all that done, its has reduced the noise somewhat. I changed the transmission oil the other week just so I'd know what was in there and went with Belray gear saver 80/90W just because I had some. I just used Valvoline 20/50 in the primary. I couldn't tell any difference in the noise, but it has been kinda cold weather when I rode the last time or two. Mine gets worse in the hot weather. I think I'm gonna go this week and get some redline heavy for the transmission and see how that does.
I see alot of people running that mobil 1 synthetic. I may change to it also. I went the other day to look and they had 15/50W but I didn't see 20/50. I know the place where I'll go to get the redline will have the 20/50 there. They are an oil distributor. I have to admit that I have never really tried or been a synthetic oil fan, but as hot as these new ones run, I will have to switch over.
I am starting to hear more and more people having the noise in 6th now. My sixth is as quiet as a mouse...even at low rpm's.
foxRM250, had the same problem finding the Mobil1 V, found it in the MC section of Advanced Auto, asked the kid at the counter in the store, he did not know they had a MC section so you might have to look for it, I sumbled on it a few weeks later gettingoil for the cage. Try the Mobil 1 V, they invented synthetic motor oil and it is the ony true triple synthetic oil with the right MC specific additive package from aMAJOR oil company, the rest are just blends of one type or another (except smallerMC spefic oil blending companies, cant speak for their quality one way or the other).
Well let's get a consensus here.
How many miles are on the bike before you all start noticing the noise?
Because if it isn't showing up until 2000 miles or so and you other guys
have only a few hundred..............?
But in order for HDMOCO to raise there QA standards, you have got to
"bitch to the company and dealer"
There is NO acceptable reason to listen to the excessively loud noise and
other problems.
Louder pipes and turning up the volume are NOT acceptable repairs.
Go to the dealer and be firm in your complaint, if it is not repaired to appropriate
level of satisfaction, call HDMOCO. file a complaint and get a reference number.
These (above) are how they generate their data base of unsatisfied customers
and what the issue is (air temp, stereo, heating, noise, etc.)
Don't let them con you into "that's just the way it is"
HD has to listen to the buyers and bring QA up, if they don't then sales will go down.
I wonder what kind of problems we will see in about two years when HD goes to a water
cooled engine in most models?
My biggest problem right now is the A/C on off switch. We're having a heat wave here of sorts, would like to turn it on, dealer said I would be cool when riding this!
