1984 ftc
Yo ALL, I just got a 1984 Touring Classic. The title lists the model as FTC
I have not seen that model designation in any listings so anyone with information regarding this bike would be appreciated. According the previous owner it is an early EVO. Shovel Bottom, 2nd Gen EVO heads and a 5 speed tranny. It has the side bags, tour pak trunk and the fairing with the 2 headlights and turn indicator bars.
One of the first questions is about which manual to get. I am not not sure since I have not run across any info for the model designation or engine build details so not sure which to get.
Second I have blown a head gasket and need to replace. I was told I can pull the heads and jugs with the engine in the frame. Is this possible? The rear cylinder top of the rocker box looks Close? Also only engine change is .060 over bore and 512 cam.
Any info and help or sugguestions greatly appreciated.

FLT model ( Tour Glide Classic)
you can pull the top end and jugs with the cases remaining in the frame
the VIN can be decoded for model and engine version ( from factory) unlikely that some one grafted an evo top end onto a shovel, but possible.
the evo, shovel, pan and knuck shared many, many parts
the is a forum for evos and another for shovels, you may have to dodge back and forth for info here and there.

MKGuitar,
Thanks for the reply..good to know I will get started on the teardown since I can do w/o removing from frame.
And as for the shovel evo I don't think he meant actual shovel just that the early builds used the same bottom end and the heads being the major change. I think?
anyway thanks and about the decoding where do I get that info?
I mean once I have the VIN and SN?

if you have a california assigned VIN ( "blue tag") this really affects the resale value- showing that the bike is a salvage or reconstruction/home built.- tougher to insure as well.
the OEM vin decoder is in the service manual, probably find one online as well.
I have a 1984-1990 FLT FXR manual at home, I can look it up.
pm me with the vin, I don't need the last 5 numerals- it'll be a while- manual in PHX, I am in New Zealand, I head home tonight
