Harley sells a 3/4 helmet with a flipdown visor what's better smoked of clear? I would think clear would be more useful but I'm not sure? Any thoughts?
Just bought an Aria XC Ram for this summers tour - blue ridge. It is the most comfortable 3/4 helmet I have owned in 45 yrs of riding. I decided not to buy the dark shield because carrying sunglasses takes no extra space since I would take them any way for general use. This helmet is light cool and fairly quite but I wear ear buds so that may not be relevant. Aria helmets are higher in cost but they fit like no other wit,h excellent quality. The 3/4. Cheek area has additional protection compared to most similar helmets. venting is excellent.
To give you an answer to your original question, the clear is more practical because you can wear sunglasses underneath in the daylight, and then a clear shield to look thru for the night vision. Best setup in my experience.
Recently in Switzerland I found at the HD shop, had a 3/4 helmet with internal shields as noted above. Originally I thought great! then I put it on my wife says it makes me look like a lolly-pop!
My thing is, I need a 1/2 helment with the shield but will only buy one after trying it first, I wont buy a helment online, I simply cant do it.
I have the HD helmet with the flip down visor. Fits pretty good. The venting could be better. I don't use it all the time, just for the long rides because my headset is attached to it. Prefer a half helmet.
I did something last season which has worked great when the sun is low on the horizon and riding straight west for any length of time. I put 2 rows of black tape on the bottom edge of the visor to block the sun. 1 click down brings it down enough to block the sun. All the way down makes it clear again. I thought it would bother me with the tape on the edge but it works great. I've had several riders ask me where I got the helmet. I just laugh when I show them what I did. The clear portion works good in the rain too.
