My son in law who is a pretty smart HD machanic pulled my front fender off my (new to me) 2010 Ultra Classic to have the previous owners dents removed (his kids bicycle fell over on it) and painted. I trust my son in law quite a bit as there are always three or four of his friends bikes at his house to be worked on and he is very maticules. (did I spell that right). Anyway he said my front tire was facing the wrong direction as Harley had an issue with the tires cupping and to resolve that problem HD recommends turning the tire in the opposite direction. Now my thoughts on this is the tread design usually is made to push rain water away from the tire but now it would pull rain water to the center of the tire. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Well, they came out with the 408f tire to correct this problem and yes they only reversed the tread....I agree with your thinking but it works. I have ridden it a lot of heavy rains with no problems. HD down here never changed the tire around (407f) they were told by corporate to replace them with the newer one's.
I think this started in late 09 or early 2010. Now the tail is always up....
There's an arrow on the side of the tire that indicates direction of rotation. If it were mine it would be right, regardless of what HD said. The arrow is there for a reason and I figure tire makers know more about tires than HD.

....except that in this case the manufacturer of the tire did screw up. Well known issue from 2010.
Yep, someone had the arrow going the wrong way on the 407f. Went through 2 tires before HD would replace it and had to get Dunlop involved too. Then there was a service directive issued by HD. Some times they just think customers are stupid and know nothing about bikes......
Thanks for all your comments. And I feel better knowing that you (Jerry1834) had ridden in the rain with this tire on backwards without any issues. That was one of my main concerns as the wife and I are planning a trip through the New Hampshire White Mountains next month. I do feel that I probably should think about replacing this tire however. If it's a defect I should change it. Any suggestions as to what tire to replace it with? P.S. Thanks again everyone.

its not a 'defect'. thats just the way the tire is. if you go to the dunlop website, they will spill out a bunch of 'designed to work in conjunction with the rear tire, blah, blah, blah'...... mumbo jumbo type stuff. but the upshot of it is that the tire works fine. its kinda nice to be able to go 20k without changing tires
if you want alternatives, check out the american elite/elite3 series tires. they get pretty good wear and good performance as well. though its been a few years since i had the e3s on my road king, i don't remember how the front tread was oriented on those.
NH some great riding up in the middle of no-where at times...I am sure you have the newer 408f on the 2010 but if its a 407f and a dealer just reversed it I would have them change it out. You may be past the time line on it.
We ride two most of the time with a lot of long distance (150k in the last 5 years). I just replace my front and rear with stock. The front you can get about 20k out of and the rear cups pretty bad around 12-15k which seems to be the nature of the tire. No matter what the brand....from what I am told.
