Ok, yesterday while riding my 08 ultra I noticed a clunk similar to the shifting clunk. The clunking was noticeable crawling at slow speeds in 1-2 gear thru a parking lot. What worried me is that it clunker while my clutch was pulled in. The clutch seems to be doing it's job, I stopped the bike with the clutch, the clunking stopped, when I got up around 10/15 mph I pulled in the clutch and with the clutch engaged while the bike slowed the clunking started again. Very similar to trying to ride in the wrong gear at too slow a speed, if that makes sense. Any ideas?
Since your running the older compensator have it checked out you don't want it tearing everything up inside there.
Yeah I'm gonna park it and take her apart this weekend, compensating sprocket is a pretty simple job, just gotta make myself do it when it's sunny and 78 degrees.
check your rear axle 1st..
I had a sound like that once.. did the same thing... it was my axle nut.. or I should say it wasn't..cuz it was gone (I somehow lost my cotter pin..)
The sound was my axle end moving in the swingarm slot..
The torque from the engine stabilized it..and when you slowed down it started cuz it was moving..
Just chk before you start tearing stuff apart..
Thanks Kyote, will do. Not something I would have considered but I'm all about checking something if it means I don't have to take off the primary cover.

I have the exact same problem on my 103" and it has what used to be called the SE compensator. They are not called SE anymore because they put them on all bikes now. Anyway, my bile only has 1455 miles on it and is under warranty. Went to the dealer and they said they could make any bike make that noise and it was normal. I went nuts and told them they were crazy. After two days of trying to get in touch with someone at the MOCO, I finally talked to a supervisory tech guy and he said it was normal for that motor and no chance of damage by riding it. You and I know that is BS, but that's what he told me. He said that since I was on record, if my compensator REALLY went bad shortly after my warranty, they would make good. I've had two friend have compensators go bad at 3K and 4.5K. I'm going to put up with it for a few months until Dark Horse comes out with their aftermarket compensator. It is due out any time now. I wouldn't waste the $275 on the MOCO part. You'll be buying the same piece of crap I have now.

Yeah Rock I've heard that same story from a bunch of guys. The Comp sprockets are ****, plain and simple. I guess I've been pretty lucky with mine. I'm pushing 80k miles and never had a problem before now other than the hotstart issues and I'm still not convinced that's not the starter going bad (again) The fix for 08 and earlier bikes used to be to replace the stock POS with the SE POS, it was suposed to be a beefier assembly, After 09 that became the stock part and from all I'm hearing it hasn't really fixed the problem. The sad part is the MOCO is aware of the problem and rather than owning up to it they play an odds game because they know that most of the time the part is going to fail AFTER the warranty expires. Well done getting on record. Give the bike a thurough check before I start taking stuff apart but I'm fairly certain that's gonna be my problem.
