Do not pry against a cooling fin to force the retainer in!
Somewhere I've seen a tool to install the clip, but I don't know the source.
I use a screwdriver at the bottom of the clip and the top of the spring collar and carefully lever it in place. With new seals it is usually hard to get the clip in. You will have to use a finger behind the p-rod cover and thumb on the clip front to help guide the clip while levering with the screwdriver. Once it is over the spring collar you might have to tap it "home" for final positioning.
Don't use the loop in the clip to install or remove. Place the edge of a screwdriver behind the clip edge along the lower end of the clip and pull towards you to remove the retainer clip.

Luck to ya,
Krutch

The 1st time I did it it was a PITA, bitchin the whole time scraped some skin off on the jugs. ended up taking me and the girlfriend to get the job done. I ended up pushing down with a flat blade and bent a screwdriver to a 90 Deg to hold and install the clip.

Make sure none of the old seals stuck up in the head.

GL It gets easier the 2nd time around.

Revisit the "look" on what the final assembly is to look like.... I'll wager green money you dont have the tube assembled correctly. Just sayin' I seen it done twice. You get forceful and you'll be bleeding or you'll bend the clip. Those clips fit a hole lot easier that one believes......if its super tough, the tube is assembled wrong.

+1 on the tool...I did it twice with the flat blade screwdriver and once with the tool. Tool gets the job done fast without blood or curse words. If you have the screwdriver lined up correctly with the pushrod cover with the right angle, the clips do go on pretty easily but it's hit & miss.

Make sure the top section of the pushrod cover is inserted firmly into the head or the clip will never go on. Been there, cursed a lot and done that. Once it was inserted properly, the clip went on without an issue.

I'm going to order one of those before the next time I work with the push rod tubes, tired of skinning up my knuckles on the jugs.
