And melt down the first time you ride in the rain ...
Nope, not at all.

You the new interweb etiquette maiden? Nobody told me.

Depends on what's important to you. If it's sound quality, the HK ain't it....

I too always wondered about using an aftermarket head unit? For one, will ALL the handle bar controls work with an aftermarket head unit, and how will it hold up in a hard rain? I have gotten caught out riding for over an hour in a really hard heavy rain with no where to pull over and get dry and I also know my brother in law was talking about not being able to get the hand controls quite right with his Kenwood, so he just gave up and went back to the HK. What does anyone know about this?

I had a hard time getting the biketronics device working right for my hand controls so i went back to HK also, in a hard steady rain the unit would be toast.

My hand controls work fine. I also have the biketronics plastic cover for the head unit. I rode home from MB on Monday in some pretty heavy rain and had no issues with this cover in place.

one day while riding on my old EGUC, i really got frustrated cause the volume wouldn't adjust to what i thought was an exceptable level. come to find out after a couple days of getting pi$$ed, running through the radio and trying to trubbleshoot it, i noticed i had not turned the intercom off. once i did that, it worked fine. volume was back to normal. i had forgotten to turn the intercome off after riding with my better half. check it out....just saying. good luck

That ain't necessarily so.
Been using my HK since it was new ('06 w/50K miles) with and ARC 125 amp and Hertz 6.5 speakers. Did the updates and it's worked perfectly (rain or shine) and gotten great reception for as long as I've had it.
Over-all, it's a great unit that I've been very happy with.
The only other modification was shortening the stock antenna whip down to about 12 in.

Everyone aware there is a problem with the later ELECTRA GLIDE models up to Oct 2011 of the radio hitting the handlebar riser bolts and cracking the circuit board. Harley has a fix for this with the front two handel bar clamp bolts having a shorter head. They also have a fix for the speaker bracket cracking with heavier duty brackets. If your brackets are slotted on outside end they are the weak ones. Got both at HD for under $5
