Got a 2007 RK with less than 13K on her. Noticed a drip where I park it and took it up to the local HD shop. They told me the inner primary seal is leaking.....$441 to get it replaced.
First question is should I be asking WTF for only having 13K on my ride and already hemorrhaging gear oil?
Second question, I just had the 10K done 3 weeks prior and there was no indications from the shop (same local HD shop) that there was anything wrong........should I question that?
I have ALWAYS liked the people at the HD shop. I have no issues with them at all and have always felt like they have given me the straight scoop.
Third question would be how hard is an Inner Primary to replace? I can tear a car apart from dome light to valve stem and have tools to play.....BUT this is my first HD and my baby and I ride a ton, two up. I don't want to get anything wrong if I leap into this.......
The seal could have been dried out from lack of use from the previous owner maybe, but my money is that they overfilled it and its blowing through the seal.. If your so inclined drain the primary fluid into something you can measure or see. If Im not mistaken it holds 28 oz. Im not in front of my manual to verify now. Someone else may chime in but think about it, it never leaked before and now that they changed the fluids its more than likely overfilled.
Ensure that the leak is not where the stator leads exit the front left engine casing. This is a very common location for oil leaks although I'm not sure why the shop would mislead you in this way.
Getting the repair done for $450 sounds about right. From what you say you most definitely can do the work yourself. Providing you have the tools (and a service manual) total cost would probably be 1/2 that.
Seals drying out, I am not worried about, this thing doesn't sit much (I ride rain or shine...ice or snow is the only thing stopping me) and I am the original owner..
I may just have to go for it myself. Labor is the real killer. Time to get the hands dirty.
The HD shop put a UV dye in the lube to verify where it was coming from so I gotta at least start from there.
I will also check for the overfill aspect as well.
