I am trying to quiet down the crackling. The v&h have a nice deep rumble when just rolling in 5 th or 6th but when starting up a hill the added throttle starts the pipes crackling.... It's not terrible but last year I started having problems with my ears and the pipes crackling all day is a bad thing.....
I also have true dual head pipes..
Thanks.
Tinman,
No crackle with my set up , I believe the true duals could be an issue with the crackle .

The easy way to remove a cat is to check out eBay. There are lots of headers on ebay that have the cat removed. Or try removing the cat material yourself, which is a pain. Or you can purchase after-market headers for more money.
The stock 2012 SE mufflers are fairly loud on my '07. No cat.
Or you could try and find the 2009 Head pipe too... I know "CharruaHD" here on HDF has them for sale.
(I just bought the OEM heat shields from him.)
Went to the dealer today for the last day of their month-long exhaust sale. Listened to a few different pipes (Monster Ovals, Rineharts, etc.) on bikes similar to mine and went with the SE Street Performance pipes. Just the sound I am looking for. Service manager assured me there would be no warranty issues just putting these on, and bike should run just fine. They're going to install them for free at my 10K service in a week or so.
Does anyone know why Harley says that the Street Performance Mufflers 64985-07A fits only '07 Touring models and '08 49 state Touring models?
I believe the original question of this thread was how to the Street Performance Mufflers compare to the Street Cannons. Did we ever get an answer?
DAKOTA.....You may be right on getting an answer.....I listened to both on similar bikes at dealer and opted for the down slash Street Performance pair. The Cannons were a bit louder and more "bass", IMO, and that's not what I was looking for. I want a nice throaty rumble and a little crack on throttling up. That's what the SP's seemed like to me. Plus I prefer the look. Both sound and looks are personal preferences so I know someone is likely to say they don't agree. That's OK....my money, my bike,my decision.
I'm not sure about part numbers and fitment...sorry I can't help you with that. On vacation and working off an iPad. LOL
Added the SE 4" touring slip ons, along with a Stage I kit, and V&H Power header. Sound is just about as loud as 4" Rineharts. I think the V&H header and Stage I kit helped open up the exhaust. Not too loud, with a nice light bark when you get on it. Can hear music at any speed.

When they set up for these sting operations they stop every bike passing the location, it can take a couple of hours to get yourself passed. By the way not many bikes get passed, even those with stock pipes.
Kind of sounds a lot like California.
Sorry I call BS here. I've lived in CA. almost all my life been riding here since about 1975 and have never owned a motorcycle with stock pipes for very long and have never seen anything like the above.I have also never been ticketed for loud pipes ever. I do however have enough sense to roll off the throttle when I ride by the cops or roll out of my neighborhood at 5:00 AM.Not only have I changed the pipes on literally every bike I've ever owned I've also yanked all the smog crap off of them because they NEVER check it.
Interesting thread.
I am also thinking of SE Street Cannons on my 2012 FLHX.
But I couldn't get a consistent answer from the dealerships as to whether or not these slip ons will affect the warranty and if a ECM download or change is needed if you are ONLY installing these SE Street Cannons. So I called Harley direct and the only answer the lady would give me is they WILL void your warranty as far as Harley is concerned. As far as whether a ECM download is needed we didn't get that far, as all this gal was interested in telling me was that they WILL void your engine warranty. Honestly I don't think too many dealer service depts. are going to go that far, but it sure would be nice if Harley and it's dealers would have consistent info. available to the owners of their products. Seems Harley is always trying to cover their *** and not looking out for the best interest of good customers.
You can also cut out the SE restrictor plug with a dremel. Takes about 10 minutes of running the dremal around the inside of the pipe until the plug drops out. Helped a friend do it and it took us longer to pull off the slip-ons than it did to cut the plug out.
I have the 64985-07A and they open up quite a bit after a few months. Not sure how long you've had them, but give them a little more time. They are EPA compliant out the door. But trust me when I say they open up over time

I thought it was just me getting used to them, but could swear it seems like mine have gotten louder after a while. Glad it's not just my imagination.
