I gotta admit I had some reservations going with Harley Boom rather than some of the other possibilties but not any more. Now I am not making any comment on the other brands out there because I have not tried them and they may be better, the same, or not as good. The four Boom speakers I added to my 2011 FLHTK though are excellent. I also added the J & M Audio accoustic foam to my inner fairing. Occsionally I see questions on here to the effect of "what's the best $400 you've spent on a DIY?". I'd have to say this is one of the best. I like music so this and my Iron Cross Audio iPod interface are great items for the road. My stereo is much louder and very clear. R&R the outer fairing is a little scary the first time but take your time, don't force anything, don't cross thread anything, and it is an easy task.
Congrats man! Always satisfying to upgrade something yourself and get some good tunes going down the road is stellar!
I'd definitely recommend the audio forum for those of you looking to do similar. I know the Boom system is plug and play, but think you might looking at some of the other options for the best bang for the $.
Did you add an amp, or just the speakers from the stock HU?
Only speakers and foam. I considered the amp but I don't think I can put one in the fairing with the iPod interface and I made my own plate to relocate my tour pak 2.5" further back and the Harley amp that mounts back there won't mount on the bracket I made. I could probably make something work but for now I am really satisfied with what I have. It is loud and clear enough to sound great at 80 and that is about where I like to ride.
If you get bored one day - grab some Polyfill from local craft place or walmart. Wrap your speakers in the fairing, and line the pods in the back (sheets not fluff type polyfill), about 1" thick around the speaker, and lining the pod.
That should really help with your mids and lows. Tighten it up and will sound great! compare before/after and i bet you'll love it. for 5$ and some time - hard to beat!!
Works a lot better than the foam liner type, though those do help a little.
