One week from today, I will be loading up my brand new Pewter RKC, and my 1959 Dover White BMW R69, and head south. Destination bikeweek. I almost forgot, I am also taking my wife. It's 1000 miles from my home here in Ohio. I used to ride down but my wife really is not up for something like that. I have never taken a bike that hasn't been ridden yet. Yep, she only has 2 miles on her. I'll have my trusty 59 as a backup if needed.
It's been a rough winter but things are about to improve. We have an Oceanfront condo lined up just south of St Augustine Beach. We plan on spending alot of time on A1A and the loop.Flagleris one of ourfavorite stopping points.I told my boss that if things go well I might even stay a few extra days.
If you're going, you will see me everywhere, I will be wearing a black leather jacket, riding a Harley, and will be grinning from ear to ear.
I've only been once, and that was in '91. I rode down to Daytona from upstate New York and not seeing any bikes on the road, I figured they must have canceled it at the last minute.
Anyway, when I got there I finally figured out that Daytona is a trailer rally. It really hit me when I was trying to find a place to camp. All the campgrounds were full. So I went to the office of a "full" camp ground and asked if they just had a few sq. feet for me to pitch a small tent so I could get some sleep, thenI'd leave the next day and go home.
The campground owner asked where my trailer was..... I told him I rode.... He said, "Oh my God, you RODE a bike down here from New York? Son, pitch your tent anywhere you like! Welcome to what used to be a motorcycle rally!
I had a real good time except for the daily rain..... I'd go again but I don't own a trailer and I feel out of place there with just a bike and a small tent.......
Hey light weight....850 miles from La.? Try 1200 miles from Mass........AKA the Great White North!
Hope to see you there, don't worry I'm just giving you $hit, I've found that no matter how far you ride from there's always some crusty old S.O.B. that's ridden further! IT"S THE RIDE MAN, enjoy it!!!!!

850 miles from me and I'm riding to it!
See ya there! I'll be the one with greasy cradle cap, road grime on my cutters, and a black bike that shines like nobody's business!

I rode down and back for almost 10 years. I even rode the 1000 miles straight thru a couple of times. The last time I rode down, I left Northeast Ohio at 6:00 AM and it was 22 degrees F. I was hopeful it would warm up as i went south. 300 miles later I pulled into Beckley WV, it was up to 25 degrees F. with snow flurries. I stopped for the night in Princeton WV and woke up to 4" of snow. Once I got thru the Bluefield Tunnel things started to improve. It got close to 40 degrees F. and was only raining. Once into North Carolina it was a piece of cake.
I had a ball. It was one of my most memorable trips ever. I must of passed 5000 trailers on I-77. People kept giving me the thumbs up. The ride down was the best part of bike week. I will probably ride down again, but I really need to trailer this year. If it gets nice along the way, I'll just pull out one of the bikes and follow the old lady.
