The top of my inner on my '03 did the same thing. One day when the outer fairing was off, I taped and masked everything off and hit the top of the inner with some Plasticoat bumper black. The match and blending was perfect and it still looks good 3 years later. The whole thing only took about 45 minutes.
My '08 Ultra did the same thing. Luckily the primary case had so many bad bearings, comp, tensioner and starter / clutch hub issues as well as general electrical gremlins that it really didn't bother me.
'12 hasn't started doing it yet.
Reminds me of Dodge trucks with cracked dashes. Makes the company look bad, but there will always be the sheep who say "You didn't maintain it properly". Why doesn't any other part of the bike do it if it's MY fault?
After three years my 2007 started showing grey throught the black on the inner. Specifically on the upper right-hand side and under the bezels. I used Mother's Back-to-Black on it and it looks like new for about three weeks, than I reapply. It's just thin paint and it wears over time in the elements and I probably oversprayed it with detailer and cleaner waxes which probably helped remove some paint over time. After 35,000 miles it's got enough marks and blemishes the fairing isn't that big a deal to me. I worry mechanical things much more than cosmetic. I'm riding from Central Florida to Milwaukee and back in August. We'll be gone for 19 days and it'll be sitting outside the entire time. I'm sure it'll come back with some more experience marks after that trip.
I don't think it's a design defect or such. If it bothers you that much take it off buy a can of Krylon flat-back and repaint it.
It's exactly like bumpers and moldings on automobiles...they fade because we don't care for them very well....They have to be moisturized like skin....Get it painted and be over with it...I did at 75000 miles because it looked like **** and now it's beautifully color matched...
I have not run into this problem on my fairing, but I would think that it would be covered if it is a defect. You might look over you warranty to see if that type of thing is explicitly stated.
The sunburn is appearing on the part of the inner fairing that sits the highest when the bike is leaned over on the sidestand, just above the speaker. I'm curious, how may others have had this problem? Did H-D cover it under warranty?
i had the finish 'fade' (actually it just completely came off) at those 2 points left and right side, and in a couple of other spots as well. got worse after getting caught in the rain.
also, a product like back to black or armor all would not work in my case. the finish was gone, not faded.
