That's an interesting idea. I also did not think that when I packed my V&H slip-ons, it lasted very long. I did get a few thousand miles though. I have since gone to RH tru-duals. Haven't had the need to pack those yet.
If you wrap, keep us posted. It will be way more expensive on the front end but may last longer.
It may also be louder as the wrap may cause the muffler to act like a straight shot. Good luck
Header wrap might be too thick. I put fiberglass cloth around mine and it worked pretty well. The fiberglass separates and pokes out from the baffles into the exhaust pipe which adds a little backpressure and quiets it down a tad. It doesn't work extremely well but it does make a difference. I personally wanted it a little quieter and deeper so I bought quiet baffles for my exhaust. If I remember I'll snap a picture of the old baffles and see what they look like.
