Default CFM flow of different intakes

Anyone done any testing? I seem to remember someone posting some flow results one time. Wondering what the limiting factor with some of these intake parts is.

Thinking of just doing a chrome SE backing plate and a k&n with no football. Did this on my old bike. Wondering if that flow much better then no football. Also how it compares to other set ups.

the last specific CFM test of intakes I remember was for evos- it was done by hot bike.

off the top of my head

the stock evo intake was about 137 CFM

the Hype Charger was about 150 CFM

the S/E and Ness ( both at the time had K&N filter elements) were about 250 CFM...

at which point the flow demand of the motor is exceeded.

the Zippers was about 400 CFM.

the key aspects are an air horn on the backing plate to order and smooth the air flow going into the throttle body

and a filter media which is not restrictive- I'd suggest an oiled K&N type would be better than a paper media.

your concept with/with out football probably makes no difference for air flow- although cooler air is denser- more oxygen- than hot air- so if you can pull air from the "slip stream" rather than hot air off the motor you are probably going to get best results.

that said, I use the football cover as the connector on the throttle body for the servo on TBW bikes is UGLY- if you have a TBW bike, look at 7 o'clock on the throttle body

I don't believe any of the aftermarket replacement air filters will restrict a mildly modified bike. CFM is not a factor, unless you are chasing big performance numbers. It also won't matter if you use the football or not! I thought they were round.....

We saw .75 hp on my 06 stationary on the dyno just by removing the football. I'm 100% certain it's restrictive.

I thought I read somewhere a stock intake was around 90cfm stage 1 130, add k&n 300 and heavy breather 330+ which is what many are

There is a cover for the TBW. The stock football cover would seem to cause the filter to be feed hot air. Thats why I don't put a cover on mine.

.75 HP, Holy Cow! That factory air cleaner cover has it damn near chocked clear off.

Put some effort to trying to find the flow rate on the throttle body and intake manifold. Spending big money on filter system which flows twice the capacity of the next most restrictive piece is a waste, unless you have plans to upgrade those parts also. Once the components meet or exceed the capacity of the intake valves, you are done unless really big money is in the plan.

FM had dyno test on their site for air cleaners...had results for ported intakes too.....want your wallet lighter and bragging rights for 2 hp???...do both. Purchase non ethanol fuel and the HP TQ numbers will change too...for a whole lot less cash exchanged.
