Default Tennessee Advice

If things work out, my friend and I plan on passing through Tennessee from Kentucky later in June. We hope to spend two nights in Nashville and the rest is open. I was thinking either two nights in Knoxville or one night in Knoxville and one night in Chattanooga. We ride. We drink. But we don't drink and ride, so the plan is to stay downtown in each city and walk to the bars and restaurants. Any recommendations for restaurants (bbq is great), live music and great scenic rides are welcome. Thanks.

In Chattanooga, Big River Grill has their own mico-brewery on Broad Street in the middle of downtown. The Terminal is also another micro-brewery off of Market Street that is a really cool place to hang out and enjoy a beverage or 7. There's lots of live music and good bars downtown depending on what you like. Track 29 and Rhythm and Brews are my favorites.

Nashville, Ho hum. East Tennessee, lots of good rides. Deals gap, cherohala skyway, and 28 into nc. If you have time, the brp is a great road too.

As far as stuff off the bike, Nashville will have the most for you to do regarding live music. You can bar hop checking out the various bands (mostly country) along Broadway. Good food down that way as well. As far as riding, it won't quite as much as the areas around Knoxville and Chattanooga.

IMO, I would do a lot more riding - especially the areas around and in between Knoxville and Chattanooga. You have Deals Gap, Cherohala Skyway, the southern portion of the BRP, Smoky Mtn National Park, and many others. You can duck into great areas in Georgia and North Carolina as well. A well-traveled day trip from Chattanooga is to ride through Murphy, NC, and then head through the Deals Gap.

Using the interstate, Knoxville and Chattanooga are only about 1.5 hours apart. So if you chose to stay in one, you can make a day trip to the other town without having to pack all your stuff if you want.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I suspected that the best riding was in Eastern Tennessee. Two years ago I rode The Dragon, which was fine in terms of taking it off the bucket list, but not my favorite. I prefer sweeping curves on the Ultra, and I will search out the Cherohala Parkway this trip. I have ridden much of the BRP in NC and VA in the past few years. Sounds as though both Chattanooga and Knoxville offer a good time, so I'm leaning towards staying in each one night. Maybe we'll work our way into northern Georgia for a day trip.

If you dig long sweeping curves, the skyway is eastern Tennessee's best kept secret. Very little traffic, and never seen a cop on it. I've ridden it a dozen times and it never gets old. Imagine the brp with no cars to mess up the scenery....

And follow 28 from deals gap, it merges with a larger road, follow that until 28 turns off again, oh my, bikers dream. No traffic, no straightaways. At one point I almost got dizzy from the 'hard right, hard left, hard right, hard left' most people give up on 28 when it turns into a 4 lane. Keep going, it's worth it.

Yup. On a nice day during the weekend, you'll find motorcycles up there almost exclusively.
