Another damn windshield thread.
Can't remember the height of the windshield, but I am about as tall as the OP and I have had good results with the recurve from Long Ride Shields. The is a video on the site that tells you how to size it.
Like most on here, I've gone through several shields. I'm just over 5'10". A couple of thoughts;
- 1) It's personal preference, but I prefer to look over the shield; bugs, dirt, scratches, the setting sun and rain can all conspire to severely reduce visabilitiy. I used a 9" recurve on my 2500 mile trip and it was too tall.
- 2) I won't buy another acrylic windshield; they scratch far easier (3X) and are nowhere near as strong as polycarbonate/lexan which is 15X stronger according to the info I found. My acrylic windshield was on the bike for 3 weeks. I washed it very carefully and was disappointed that it scratched so easily. It also cracked from a mounting hole but it wasn't until I attempted to cut it down that I realized how poor acrylic is as a material compared to polycarbonate; it shattered easily.
3) The easiest way to determine what height you want is to put little pces of 1/8" tape at various heights on the stock clear shield and go for a ride. As you ride, check out what would be above/below the shield for each height and choose accordingly.
I just ordered a 7" polycarbonate recurve from Fastaire and the customer service has been great. I'll post my thoughts on the new sheild after using it for a few weeks.
Cheers,
Dave

I prefer to have a windshield that I look just above while riding.
I ride with a helmet that has a "bill" for sun protection (as well as bugs) and this works well with my windshield.
The stock windshield on my 2013 CVO S/E Ultra is about an inch too short for me and I get the "buffeting" on my helmet. Not too bad for hot weather riding but I'll have to get a taller windshield for cooler weather and long trips.
While a certain height windshield may work well for one person who is 5'-10", it may not work for another person of the same height.
A shorter or longer inseam for person(s) who are 5'-10" will result in difference in torso length and will result in the rider having a different line of vision over the top of the windshield.
