Took HD about 5-6 weeks to get everything to me when I refinanced, I see others were around the same times frame as well. I even started getting notices from my credit union about taking so long to get the title and re-register.
I know this is too late for you but it may help the next guy; I live in Louisville Ky. and we have an HD dealer on the side of I65 and I know you can take your bike by there and they will sell it to someone else and do all the paperwork (even finance it for them). I think it would have giving you a tag and your title would have been returned to you (the buyer) and not the seller. They do this all the time but not sure how many other dealers do this, not sure if it's a Harley thing or something this dealer does for customers.
I have bill of sale, the original title-signed off by the previous owner- but still has hd financial as lien holder, and I have insured the bike. It is my understanding that I need release of lien to plate the bike? I may be wrong. I hope not because I could have been riding by now.
In Michigan the owner must be present to register the bike. Since you are not the "legal"owner yet you may not register it. You have to wait. I bought a car that was financed through an out of state bank and had to go through the same thing you are dealing with 4 weeks is not unusual. I was lucky the previous owner let me drive it on their plates as long as I showed my insurance certificate.
I just contacted SOS in Mi and they said I can not register bike in my name until I have the release of lien. I have thought about riding it many times, but if something happens, it would not be worth it. Like others have said, I need to be patient. And maybe now would be a good time to do some mods instead of this winter. Wife may not agree.
HD Financial doesn't get in a hurry about anything. It took over a month for me to get a letter from them saying my loan had been paid off after I refinanced with a local Credit Union. I also don't believe HD Financial accepts personal checks for Pay Off
EXACTLY THIS! HD Financial SUCKS. I refinanced with my local credit union too, and HD Financial all but refused to sign off on the loan/title and mail it out. Took over a month, and a call from the credit unions attorney. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER would I ever use HD finanancial again.

My question is why would anyone in the first place, unless your credit is marginal to begin with.

High interest rates, ahhh no thanx.
I have very good credit. I used HD finance twice in the past. I knew I only needed the loan short term. HD credit was a much better rate than any local lending institution.
I had very good luck with HD credit. I was in no hurry to get the title in hand after I paid off each bike, so I don't even remember how long it took to get it, but I don't remember any delay.
I also bought both of my new bikes in the winter during special sales. That might have had something to do with the low rates I was offered.
+1 throw some plates on that bike and ride it like you stole it.If you are haveing probs getting a spare plate I'd check with the sheriff, they usually have a trunk full.Hope this helps. have run into hangups like this before and know how you feel.
