removed ignition to change bars, 08 ultra, when I went to put it back inI turned the bars to lock position to re install ignition but they wouldn't lock. now I cant get ignition lined up to get it to lock I tried moving the top and bottom seperately but have totally f**ked up........Please Help
Thanks I got it back in but its sticky now and you have to move the bars hard to the left to get them to lock. To unlock them you have to pull on the a bit to get the switch to release..like something is nipping or jaming it a bit
if you cant get it watch this video and if you havent make this tool. i used 5/16 copper tubing. you shouldnt have to push or pull on anything i would pull the lock again make this tool and start over
AWESOME Video. It is on my to-do list now. That alignment tool is around 70bucks. Copper tube is way cheaper and works pretty cool. Thanks for that video.
That video explains it perfectly. An important detail is you MUST remember to depress the tab on the bottom of the switch **** housing when reinstalling everything. A lot of guys make this mistake and can't get it back together.
I work on fairing bikes quite a bit, so I went ahead and bought the alignment tool... found one online for $75.
I used a wide blade screwdriver with no problems. There's a couple different ways that you can pull the switch out. The way I was doing it to start with was definitely the hard way. Locking the forks and using the key is absolutely the easiest way to take it out and using a tool of some sort to turn the switch to keep it lined up.
Just a note for anyone with an older Harley. I have a 2003 FLHTCI and you have to put the ignition to Access, not lock like in the video. Just a heads up.
Get a decent flashlight & look down there & make sure the slots are perfectly lined up. Just went thru this about 10 minutes ago. Also, use a screwdriver that's just slightly larger than a normal Stanley screwdriver. Worked for me!
