Only happens in 5th and 6th gear, 70+mph. It's not a constant knocking sound, more of a random "pop, ting" kinda thing.
I shift gears at 3k ish, and when I hit 75 I go into 6th. Normal hiway speed for me is 80-83. That's right at 3k rpms.
I in hi highest octane I can find around here, still about 10% ethanol. I have used 2 small bottles of Lucas octane booster and my last fill up I used lhp.
So far non of that has helped. I don't have a power commander unit. I'm getting about 38 mph. My commute is 40 mile round trip. Power is fine.
In the mornings I don't hear a peep outta it.
Screamin eagle plugs and wires.
Give me some ideas. I'd rather not pay the dealer a bunch of money for something easy. Oh, I've been running Lucas oil and this last change was syn3.
Really thinking about amsoil next time.
Swapped plugs at lunchtime . Still had the noise on my ride home.
Rear cylinder plug was tan/gray, front plug was orange! Never seen that before.
Old plugs were screaming eagle, new are ngk. Screaming eagle wires are about 1.5 yrs old.
The noise always sounded like the front cylinder. Any ideas as to why is orange?
The active ingredient in most octane boosters will turn the plugs orange. No harm done.
Not a fan of ngk spark plugs, but ask the local parts store for a set of ngk that are a couple of heat ranges cooler and reevaluate. If it improves or goes away, I'm thinking it's ping.
My compression is stock, but I was getting an occasional ping, so I went with the high compression p/n. No more ping at all. I don't know how bad yours is, mine was pretty mild.
And if you do decide that it is ping, run a half a can or so of techron through the throttle body with it running to knock any carbon buildup off the pistons
My thought is that it may not be detonation at all. A friend of mine thought the same thing and turns out the rear brake pedal arm was touching the front heat shield at certain vibration frequencies. If you know someone that definitely knows what detonation sounds like, have him ride it and see if that's what it really is before chasing your tail.
