Ya need some kind of true duals and small cans. Big touring mufflers have too much volume for the sound ya want. Of course the bigger touring cans give baggers more stock HP than Dyna/Softials...

This comment is a little off topic, but I'd forgot how cool my Evo Heritage sounded til I heard my buddies S&S Evo a few months back...... Those Evo's had an awesome sound..... And I even put true dual , 1 pipe on each side, on that bike.....

I think you're right with the "small cans" comment. They always have a much smaller diameter than the touring pipes/slipons. My buddy has a sportster with short shots. It sounds awesome with those little pipes. Never dawned on me till now that the diameter of the pipe would be causing a lot of it.

My buddy has Vance and Hines big radius 2-2 and it sounded pretty darn close to my softail with the same pipes but his bike has stretched bags and fender so it looks killer.
