My front wheel bearings went out at 30K on trail ridge road in Estes Park Colorado, that was scary coming down the switch backs with the front wheel screaming at you. The wife and I were stranded in Grand Lake, not a bad place to drink and eat on a Sunday afternoon in September. It is a well known problem for the 09's, poor quality control and single row bearings. My 02 never gave me any wheel bearing issues, my shovels and pans either. Newer is not always better.
'00 to '07 featured 21mm wide double row bearings on 1" axles that routinely went 100,000 trouble free miles. ( I changed mine out at 100,000 just on principle and the Indy said that they still didn't need changed!)
'08 to present now run 15 mm wide "single row" bearings on 25 mm axles with a frightening failure rate IMO.
My Scoot has just shy of 26000 miles.
I read on here about the 09s having a bearing problem and just kept it in the back of my mind... seems someone said there was sand in there from the casting process.
glad i checked.
I bet many a wheel has went back on a bike without ever having the bearings checked.
I put my new tires on tonight, Michelin commander II's, wow what a difference... of course I am coming back from the darkside.....
