Folks, looking at an 05 Road Glide with high miles.
Bike has 75,000 miles on unmodified engine and pipes.
Cam chain tensioners done 2 years ago, not many miles put on since then.
Regular maintenance done.
No leaks.
If I get into this bike, am I looking at an engine rebuild in the near future?
What other issues with this year and mileage should I be looking at?
My 02's did well with minimal issues over the time I had them, had 100,000 km on last EGC but with gear drive and cams.
I work and ride with a fellow that has an 02 Dyna and he has 135000 on his and all that has been done other than regular maint. is a carb and a set of chain tensioners
If it's quite and has compression, who knows? Sure would not pay a lot for it, and you need to be able to work on it yourself. These roller bearing are tough, but all it would take is the connecting rod sleeve bearings to go and it all needs to come apart including splitting the block. Big bucks unless you are doing it and even then not cheap since you need a few special tools, press and such.
99 to 02 had the strong cranks ( I've got 130,000 on mine.) The crank on the 05 is cast and rides a roller bearing. Probably good til 100,000.
But like on my bike, miles lowers the price. So buy it cheap and have enough left over to do the motor in 25 or 30,000 miles from now.
I've started freshening things up on my ride. Motor mounts, crank sensors, fuel pump, swingarm bushings, wheel bearings etc so that it'll get me to 200,000 on that hot forged crank. Still runs better than new. Miles shouldn't scare you away.
Thanks Guys.
Miles have never bothered me if maintained.
I was thinking I would have to get it for a real good price to keep some money in reserve to do the motor down the road.
Bike is about 5 hours from me so a day trip is coming up I think..
I have regretted selling my 02 RG for years. It was an 02 and ran great.
