Default Oil cooler decision

I have a 99 RKC that is new to me. My local Indy that I meet yesterday who is a retired HD mechanic, now does some extra work on the side to keep busy took a look at my ride. He said the first thing he would do would be to add an oil cooler from Jagg. Is it worth it for only a 7-10 degree change in lower temp.?

I wouldn't own a harley without a cooler, but in the big scheme of things, it really depends on how you ride. If you don't frequent stop and go traffic or in town riding, it's probably not critical.

You will most likely get many different answers to this question. But IMO Yes. I run one on my current ride and wouldn't go without!

Default Did I make a mistake/frustrated?

I bought a 99 RKC in near mint condition about three weeks ago with 26K miles. Tons of chrome and extras for $8200. I'll admit I have always wanted a RK and it was somewhat of a compulsive buy and the price was what really sold me. This bike looks awesome and runs great. BTW, it has the Marelli fuel-injection. The bike is basically stock with lots of chrome from what I can tell. What should I be looking for or concerned about from here on?

I got a '99 e-glide with the m@m injection also. Mine has 54k miles on it and it runs sweet. As long as you don't plan on alot of motor work, you should have minimal issues with it. It probably has had a stage one done to it by now and like they say ,if it ain't broke don't fix it. My '99 runs alot cooler then my '03 did. Upper 90 degree temps are hot no matter where your riding, so as long as it doesn't cook you,see if you can exist without the cooler. If your stuck in stop and go traffic the motor will heat up as if you didn't have a cooler on it. That's really the only time you would need one, but without lots of air moving thru it its pointless. Keep the tires new and inflated, change the oil when it needs it, and keep it rolling down the road.,,

What constitutes a Stage 1 upgrade and how would I know on my bike? What about those cam tensioners everyone speaks of? Someone talked about a hydraulic or gear drive upgrade.

A stage one up grade usually consists of different / louder mufflers or a complete exhaust system, and a less restrictive air cleaner. With a reflash of the ecm, to add just a touch more fuel to the motor as changing the pipes and air cleaner cause them to run leaner. That's usually done by a dealer, and you can't be sure if it's been done just by looking at the bike. You'll need some history from the past owner, but usually they will run like crap if it hasn't been flashed. Cam tensioners were more of an issue with older twins cams like yours, and they need to be looked about every 20k miles or so. A gear drive upgrade can be pricey compared to replacing the cam shoes. Like I said earlier the M@M injection system is limeted on how much you can hot rod it, with out loosing reliabilty.,,

My local Indy HD mechanic that I meet yesterday suggested that I let him take the bike and have it Dyno'd to start with because he says they were lean from the factory. The pipes look original but has some brand of slip-ons but can't find a brand on them so far. I was told cam shoes were done at 19K but don't have paperwork to prove it. Indy says this motor is solid and from 99-2002 used the best bearings, but M and M FI was problematic when people started changing motor stuff. Not sure but I think the air filter has been changed but outer cover is football stock cover. So maybe it already has a Stage 1 done to it.

Go with a fan assist oil cooler and be done with it. Reefer from Ultracool is my choice.

I run the HD oil cooler and here in the southwest it helps and also keeps the nads a little cooler!
