I just replaced another one as suggested:

1.) Inserted the "Self Taping" Slotted End First

2.) I used the Torx screw and I went in smooth !

Thanks guys !

And I'll go a step further and say that if you do tap the hole first, your repair won't be as robust because the new threaded insert will not fit as tightly.

Went to Lowes and got brass inserts for half the HD price. Same size, but bigger threads which should hold better. Like others have said, slotted end goes in first, then a screw it in with a T-27 torx.

I picked up two just to have on hand @ $1.75 ea.. The dealer said to use a flat head screwdriver in the slot to install.

The Dealer is wrong!

And here's a couple of points from an engineering perspective as evidence...

1) Why would you want the slotted end out thereby resulting in incomplete threads at the screw mating surface?
2) Where does the displaced material from cutting the threads go when you install the insert solid end first? That's what the slots are for so they need to go in first.

That dealer is wrong. If you do it that way, you'll be screwed. So to speak. And they have them at Lowes for $. 40-.50 each.

The Slotted End is "Self Threading" don't use a screw driver..... use the #27 torx screw as talked about

I work for a machine shop my head machinist agrees...
