Default Any one have this ever happen

Ok, Folk's, has any one ever had the insert on the top of the handle bar cover on the Road King Classic come off for no apparent reason.

Last May, whilst on my way to work, in slow moving traffic, the above part, a small flat chrome and black edged plastic cover, hiding the handle bar clamp bolts, pinged off the top of the metal ignition and handle bar clamp cover and disappeared under the wheels of a passing car, rendering the part useless.

As my bike is still under warranty my local dealer supplied and fitted a new one and I asked them to make sure the same thing didn't happen again by using some form adhesive as a back up.

Last week, whist again on my way to work, but this time in the overtaking lane of a duel carriageway,( that's a sort of freeway ) the part again flew off the cover. The difference here was however that I was doing 60MPH, the posted speed and the part hit me in the face ( I wear an open face helmet ) causing me to swerve, not knowing initially what it was that had hit me. I was fortunate that it was 6 in the morning and little traffic on the road, although the traffic near me did honk their horns, adding to my shock.
(In case your wondering, the screen was fitted to the bike)

I contacted the dealer who was most apologetic and told me that the technician had used silicon as a adhesive in response to my request to stick the thing in place.

I now have another part on order and will be fitting myself this time.

Has this ever happened to anyone else ( the part coming off without permission )and if so did you remedy and how.

I'm thinking of using number plate tape as this will allow the plastic insert to be removed if needs be, however, any advice would be gratefully received

It sounds as if what you are describing is being caused by the part being "torqued" off, as in the underlying part to which the "fly away part" is attached is somehow twisting/breaking the seal/press fit into giving up.

Strange.... Mine is a pain to get off. It takes a screwdriver and some pretty good prying to get it off.

Mine only comes off with some careful prying. Sounds like the base that it attaches to (can't recall what the cover actually attaches to right now) is not holding the cover in place as it should, so probably not an issue with the cover, but with the base.

Thanks for the reply's Guys , I've put a small rubber grommet between the two clips on each side, giving the clips more resistance against springing out and making the clips tighter in the holes. My initial idea was to use licence plate tape but that made the cover stick up and look out of place. I wont know it my fix has worked for a while as it normally happens about the 3000 mile point. Fingers crossed its sorted.

What sort of bolt heads are on the bolts which hold the handle bar cover? Mine are recessed flat head phillips head bolts. If your are rounded heads, they are keeping the cover from seating fully and it eventually vibrates to the point where the tapered tips of the retainers actually push themselves out of the receiving holes, hence the mysterious "launch". If you have the proper screws holding the cover then it must be "tweaked" to the point that the trim cover can't properly lay flat and should be replaced. As far as I know, your experience is unique.

If one of the tabs is bent or gone it only takes some vibration for it to fly away...I've had mine off so many times I keep expecting it to happen to me. I haven't seen an aftermarket designer billet for that spot...hummmm someone needs to jump on that nitch.

To answer the question, no it has not happened to me.
I have had that cover off a couple of times; pry it off, pop it on, no problem.
