I'm sure the missus would like the comfort of the tour pack more but it depends if you actually travel long distances and need the luggage capacity. If not, go with the backrest. I have a 2013 SG and I have the backrest and detachable luggage rack. I just bought the harley overnight bag as we do light touring (250-300 miles, overnight). That bag looks great on the bike and you can remove all of it in minutes. Tour Pak is functional but lets face it, it looks "old man-ish".
I have a king tour pack and a sissybar back rest both. I usually have the back rest on for the wife but if we are going 150 miles or more, I throw the king on and let her chill back there. She loves the more "secure" feeling with the arm rests.
If you ever wanna upgrade your tunes....King tour pack is the obvious choice.
I got a quick detach on mine...pull it and run solo seat when girlfriend isn't along. Quick rides we have put on the backrest and luggage rack....but lose so much from the tunes.
Got a 500 watt amp now and you lose a ton of sound with no rear speakers...so since the stereo upgrade....I think the king tour pack has been off only once. May not be as pretty...but still turns heads when they hear the stereo blasting at em.
Glad you decided on tour pack...you won't be sorry....
I have a chopped tour pack on order which will have a rack fitted along with the back rest pad. I already have the solo and two up detachable racks and a sissy bar set up for if I have the rear seat on.
For normal use I have the solo chrome rack as per the picture
since my wife don't ride with me all the time . and she wanted the king tour pack type of back rest I got the tourrest back rest. I have the stealth rack with the 4 point docking hardware. I bought a standard sissy bar and the tourrest. everything was still cheaper then a king tour-pak.
It's hard to beat a king tour-pak for traveling. Especially if it is going to be removable, and only on 20% of the time. Why not get the big one to carry more for the overnight trips with the wife? My wife likes it much better than the back rest.
I would say go with detachable and get both. I normally ride with a backrest and stealth rack but have a king tour pak for trips or when the wife wants to be comfortable on longer rides. Works great. I like the king tour pak because even on 1 day rides you can store 2 full face helmets.
