The bike is stock. I just reached 2k. I was burning 91 but have been burning 94 for the last 5 fills. I thought of trying octane boost but never have. The noise happens with no load. And you maybe right, it might just be valve noise. I also heard that i should try a colder plug. Anyone hear of that? Either way, its going to the moutains in three weeks.
Thanks for all the feedback.
MT, my 2011 limited is bone stock except for slipons and it pings just as you describe when it gets hot. I run 89-91 octane in my bike. It is normal for your bike. The best thing you can do is give her a stage 1 and get rid of that damn cat. I have a catless pipe, big sucker, flxied from fleabay waiting on me when I get back, that should cure the ping and run a hell of a lot cooler. With everything I have, less than 600 in the complete stage 1. Runnin down the road you are gonna hear valve clatter, thats your 103 singing to you, lol... Hope you get her sorted out man. Stay safe.
Sounds like what you're describing is mainly due to high temperature which I total agree. Do you know of anyone installing a cooling fan in front of the cylinders?

When I was trying to eliminate my pinging I tried it all inc going to a cooler Vrod plug thats still in the bike, but it wasnt octane, more fuel or snake oil it was strtegically retarding timing in the affected RPM ranges that worked which necessitated a flexible fuel management device.

This sounds typical for a stock bagger. Without burning a lot of dough.
1. stage one pipes
2.stage 1 air cleaner
3.Vance&Hines fuel pak
If you decide to do cams or other mods later you can upgrade to TTS or SESRT accordingly. The Fuel Pak does have some resale value.
2011 103 just at 11000 miles just got back from a 2460 mile ride averaged out at 46 mpg at 75mph damn thing ran flawlessly no noise but my earplugs were in pertty good and jams turned so's not to hear what I didn't want to. used 1/2 quart of oil. power awesome.......power vision FM slipons and FM A/C stage one ....still have the cat so was a little hot but again ran flawlessly. Yes when I forgot to put my earplugs in it sounded loud after 500 mile in a day but never lost power and the only reason I had to stop was to put my earplugs back in..... I love this damn thing its a friggin beast not fast but a beast
Is the ETMS still turned on?? When mine was stock and still had it turned on it would do some funny crap kind of like that when I would start to take off from a long idle at a red light. It would rattle then bog then pick up and go like normal. Since I've done the mods and killed the ETMS there hasn't been a problem.

Hopefully the next couple of days are hot so I can eliminate that. Thanks
when I first got mine it use to ping like crazy from all rpms and even at idle. took it to the dealer, they removed the ecm and shipped it to the factory, they reflashed it and sent it back. I don't know why they had to pull the whole ecm but it fixed the problem.
