New ride. 2012 FLHTK.103 Cu In. I have an ignition ping when Engine is hot. At idle it hesitates and pings when I roll the throttle. I brought it to the dealership where I bought it and all they told me is that the tech did not hear anything. Not impressed after telling them to listen to it when I dropped it off (hot). I have an appointment with another dealership which hopefully they will listen to me. Does anyone know if this is a known issue with these bikes? I am also experiencing some clutch noise that clears up when the clutch leaver is applied.
Mick Cawthorne at Kanes, Calgary is a straight shooter. Their power is back on and they have re-opened
at idle speeds the motor is under no load so it would be unlikely that it would suffer pre-ignition.
unless someone has monkeyed with a tuning type device
under most conditions the ecm will sense pinging and retard timing to avoid this
any chance you have loose exhaust shields or something rattling around?

If I understand the description, blipping the throttle at idle induces the pinging. What happens with an increase in throttle just above idle but in gear? If it really is pinging, it would almost have to be bad gas if it happens with no load. If it doesn't ping with the loading described above, it almost has to be a mechanical noise/rattle.
Hummm me too? Pre-ignition usually occurs under load like a previous post....no insult to your intelligence but could you be mistaking valve noise as pinging by chance?
My 2012 Ultra Classic had bad pre-igintion pinging under load on very hot days. The bike was completely stock and the pinging started right after I bought it. Since it only occurred on really hot days and only under load, it just tried to not load the engine. I assumed it was because of the very lean factory settings, but don't know for sure. I have not experienced it this summer with the Xied installed.
+1 on the octance check. That 91 octane stuff doesn't seem to matter much in cold weather but when it gets hot, that's when the pinging starts if you aren't usin the right octane fuel.
The bike is stock. I just reached 2k. I was burning 91 but have been burning 94 for the last 5 fills. I thought of trying octane boost but never have. The noise happens with no load. And you maybe right, it might just be valve noise. I also heard that i should try a colder plug. Anyone hear of that? Either way, its going to the moutains in three weeks.
Thanks for all the feedback.
