I transitioned to touring from a FB and the bike that fit best was the RKC. As others suggest try 'em all. I have seen the 'buffeting' comments but it has not been evident or a problem for me .. do try it yourself tho....

If you're not looking to "tour" and take big trips, I gotta ask why switch?

I just moved from a Fatty to a King because I was taking more trips and a lot of 2-up riding. While the King is much more comfortable, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Fatty.

Seems to be a popular transition Fatboy to RoadKing. I went that way also. Rode a FB for 10yrs then bought RK a few years ago. Even though I enjoyed the Fatty..... didn't take long with the RK to think, why didn't I do it sooner.

After riding RK for a few years now, I could never go back.

I see you're in Vegas...Red Rock has a few 12 Road Glides and a couple Road Kings for sale so maybe you could go and test ride one. I went to a RK b/c I like the touring feel and bags but the option to pull the windshield off and ride in a more "classic" way. The windshield only goes on in winter as it seems to make the ride about 20 deg warmer and comes off in summer. As for windhsield buffetting, I don't have a problem with it. The only time I have had slight buffeting is riding the 215 on a really windy day when you're leaned over pretty hard to go straight...like many windy days in Vegas. I have never been that concerned about a radio. A buddy of mine wanted a RK and then tried a RG and says he is glad he went with a fairing and radio. He came off a Softail standard and initially didn't want a radio or fairing. Now he won't turn the radio off! So just try them out and you may be surprised what you like.
BTW, if you have any buddies wanting to buy a Softail, he has an 07 for sale, asking about $10k.

I went from a Dyna to a EG Ultra and now looking back I wonder why I waited so long. However since my better half doesn't want to ride anymore most of the time my bike is in the SG mode, with the tourpak removed and solo seat installed. Much more fun to ride in that mode.

You could get a road king and get a detachable fairing.

It's all good. I've heard many guys who owned both say that the touring frames/suspensions handle so much better, and anything beyond 2009 model year has the new frame/tires and is far and away a better touring bike. ...but, if you're not doing lot's of miles that might not be such a big deal to you.

To each their own.

I have done enough miles on my Fat boy to know that I would not like taking it on a long trip...the main reason is comfort. Yes, I do get positive comments on my bike where ever I go, which is nice. I just think a touring will be a bit more comfortable.
Any way, I am not in a hurry and I do need to test drive a few.
