Default FL-VIED settings?

When adjusting the VIEDs what am I trying to accomplish? How do I know when I have it right?

My Rinehart slipons have discolored a bit (the right one) prior to the FL-VIED and header decat was put on and as I understand it that is caused by a lean condition. I want to make sure I get the right air/fuel ratio but not real sure on what exactly I'm looking at, listening too, etc on adjusting the VIEDs,

2010 EG Limited, stock air, rinehart 4" slipons and decatted stock header.

Please no comments about should have got a tuner, etc. This is the route I took and until I'm feel a need to get a tuner, this is it for me.

Thanks for any help.

Robert

Vieds have a tiny clock dial adjuster for each cyl. All the way to the left is most lean, and all the way to the right is more rich.

You can e-mail nightrider with your specific setup, and they will respond with a suggested setting.

If your bike runs well there, you are good to go.

You can try a little leaner or richer, but they seem to be spot on with their recommendations.

They will probably recommend 50% (1/2 way between full lean and full rich) for your setup.

If later you add a high flow air cleaner, you can turn them just a bit more clockwise.

Don't want to over think this as the adjustment is quite small.

i have a decatted pipe and fl-vied-10 set at 50% and runs good . i tried 75% and 100%. with the higher setting i got some popping in the exhaust due to reversion. free flowing pipes and mufflers they need to be backed off alittle, with the cat i ran them at 75%

I have mine set a little more than 50 percent, I don't see much improvement if I go much higher than that...just poorer gas mileage

Cheers,

Okay, I'm at 50%, was at 75% prior to decat. I was just trying to understand the making the sausage a little better.

I've got mine at the 75% setting. A/C, slip-ons and de catted headpipe. No popping at all and mid 40's in the mileage dept!

So does increasing the setting increase fuel to the ratio or decrease it?

yes it does, but after talking at length with steve at nightrider he told me to back off of the adjustment when running no cat and freeflowing mufflers because you are allowing fresh air into the exhaust system causing reversion. that's why having no exhaust leaks is very importent. also by having free flowing mufflers fresh air can and does get to your 02 sensors and they read that air as lean so they richen it up some more. so you need to lean it out alittle. kinda backwards thinking if you are use to working on carbed bikes

2010 Road King, decated stock head pipe, Vance & Hines slip ons with baffles and stage 1 air filter. Mine are set at 50% and the bike runs great.
