Default voltage regulator problems

I have had my 2006 FLH for 3 years now. last year I had an intermittent problem start and hasn't gone away. I can be riding and all of a sudden the ampmeter gauge will drop from 14+ volts down to 10ish and the check engine light and stuff comes on. I keep going and after a mile or so it will come back up and be back to normal. here recently I have had the opposite problem. be riding and all of a sudden the ampmeter will peg out, lights getting brighter and then It will go back to normal after a minute or two. I suspect the voltage regulator being bad, anyone got any tips for me?

Yup! Go to the DIY Electrical section where there are stickys with tips on checking your charging system. That should enable you to identify the culprit.

sounds like a bad connection, check at battery and grounding.

Same thing with mine. I ended up putting a new stator, and a volt regulator on. Not a bad job.

Mine was the regulator. If you're pegging the volt meter I wouldn't ride it as that will fry your stator if it goes on long enough.

Amazon had the cheapest replacement at $164.00 delivered from Cycle Electric.

yea D, it happened going home from work the other day. did the checks and the the regulator was bad, drove the truck straight down to HD and bought a new one. took it for a couple short trips and purposely went towards the rain. and so far everything is much better.
