Just an FYI... A friend and I fixed this the other day on a bike and it was corrosion on the starter solenoid cable connection. You could look at it under the boot and assume it was fine until you unbolted it.
Apparently it takes just a hair or extra resistance to start tripping the relay and drop the voltage. It would shut all the electrical on the whole bike down until it cooled.
Maybe this will help someone..
