Default First Dyno Run Ripoff?

Back in July, I took my bike to a dealer in VA. They put on Rinehart True Duals,SE intake, and a SERT. I thought I was finished.... I was looking for a nice mellow sound, the end of the family jewels getting roasted, and a little more oomphf... Nothing spectacular, just a minor tweak. Paid for a dyno. Got the bike back, and it did sound the way I thought it would, seemed a little crisper, but still ran HOT!

So, I put up with this for a while, then one day it died in 65 degree weather... I sorta freaked out... In talking to a dude at work, he recommended that I visit his dealer, and ask what was up. I did, told them my story, and left the bike and SERT there, and asked them to have a look. They did, and told me that it WAS running lean, evidenced by white spark plugs. They said they could do a dyno, and tighten things up, and cool the low speed stuff off. They did a dyno, and I will post the chart tomorrow from work, but I am wondering... DID I NOT GETA DYNO the first time at the original dealer? I would love to know if there is a way to find out from the ECM how much has been done to it, but I doubt that technology exists...

Here are some numbers....
Before the new shop did any adjustments:
Max HP 67.83
Max TQ 71.74

After the new Dyno
Max HP 74.49
Max TQ 75.71

Also the Air Fuel Line pre any work is flat straight across the RPM range at about 13 and change.... After the dyno, nice dip right off idle, showing richness down low.. to keep it cool, and then a little bit of waviness to peak at around 14, but as low as 12 in one spot. I am definitely happier with the bike, it seems to have a better manner in stop and go traffic, sounds "different" at idle, and pulls nicely except for a little burp right off the line... I was about a month away from pulling the trigger on this bike, because all the dealers that I talked to kept saying "they all do that"... It is still too cool here in the DC metro area to see how the bike will do at 65 to 80 degrees, but it already seems improved.

Should I even worry about trying to prove my point? I feel like the dealer that did the original work either did not do the dyno, or sucks at it so bad that it ought to be brought to their attention, and I ought to get some money back, but I am not really sure if I can prove anything, as the original shop never gave me a dyno sheet, and says that they do not think they can find it... Part of me says to just enjoy the upcoming season, and never visit the dealer where I got the pipes again, but the part of me that had to earn the 300 clams thinks I oughta rip somebody a new one...

Any thoughts? As always, thanks for putting up with my rants, and thanks for the good advice I have gotten from you guys.. now I guess I need some floating rotors, and I am pretty much done except for riding!

Cheers,
GOSTAZ

Although I am not a tuning expert, but, if your air/fuel ratio was "around 13", your bike was not running lean - although your plugs would tend to differ with that assumption. If the bike is near 14/1 , that would be regarded as being ideal. Not sure where your 2nd tuner "found" 7 hp, but, that's pretty impressive. Perhaps there were some changes done to the timing curve that might explain the increase in power, but, as far as heat's concerned, we have to remember we're sitting on an air cooled engine that get's damn HOT and, if we're not moving, our family jewels (sorry ladies) are gonna suffer!

Did you pay for a dyno tune or just a canned map to be loaded?

i think the dealer that has it now can tell what the other dealer did
if it was a canned download or if he tweaked on it

Ask the initial dealer for the dyno run sheet. My dealer stores these on a computer and can print them out months later; for example, for comparison purposes for subsequent modifications.

That first dealer had probably inserted a canned map and concentrated on wide open throttle settings only. The print out you got would show that everything looks good, however didn't adjust mid and low fuel. That is why it is still running lean and hot. The second shop probably concentrated on that mid / low fuel. The several 07's I have Dyno'd with the same exact combination made around 77 hp and 90 ponds feet. Sounds like there is more in there.

GOSTAZ, I am preparing to have the same work done on my 07 Ultra. I went to a N.VA dealership for pricing. After reading your story I am concerned I might be going to the same place. Well I dont want the same experience. Would you be willing to PM me the dealers name and the dealer that straightened it out? They quoted 3 hours or more dyno time. I wonder how you know how long it really took. Thanks

3 hours is fairly quick for a good dyno tune, some tuners take up to 5.

The thing that sucks is that the original dealer will not give me a sheet, they say they cannot get it. Hmmm... Hope I did the attach right, the sheet in this post is the most recent one. Cost me 199.00 and looks to be right where I want it. That works out to about 2hrs and change around here labor wise... I am not sure if he spent 2 hours doing it, but I think what was done was done right, so I have nothing but good things to say. These numbers are not huge, but remember this is a 2006, so its an 88 incher... I didn't get the 96... I am happy that the bike seems to run much better. Looking forward to a real honest to goodness spring day to get out and ride!

I dunno just moved away from the DC metro area... purchased my '06 Road King Classic from a dealership in Fairfax... it was anunpleasant experience from the get go, and over all the most horrible experience I've ever had at a dealership. I'd stay away from them. Since then I've traded that bike for my Ultra.
