Question Stator charging system problems

Greetings,

I have a 2000 Ultra Classic and have had few problems with it, last April coming back from Texas my stator/voltage regulator failed on me, luckily I found an independent bike shop to repair it and get me on the road, it was fine for about 3 months and same problem again, so I bought a compu-fire 3 phase charging system (stator, regulator and rotor) from J&P and again it was fine until the other day, just past the warranty period. Is there something that could be causing the stator to keep failing or just an unlucky coincidence? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mike

air impact wrenches on the compensator nut can knock the magnets off the rotor, the loose magnets then dings the stator windings.

use hand tools on these- insist that others take the extra 1 minute and do the repair correctly with a torque wrench [100ft lbs., loosen, then 140 ft lbs]

if the damage is a burned stator, that might indicate a shorted circuit somewhere OR a dead battery can kill a charging system

How do you know the stator went out along with the voltage regulator??

Both times previous the stator was burnt, I just replaced the regulator to be safe. I have not taken it apart yet but one of the connector pins between the stator and regulator was burnt, I cleaned them up and temporarily connected them but it still wouldn't charge.

easy enough to test a reglator with aknown good stator-- and known good battery.

check if it only passes DC current- no AC

check if the voltage is kept below about 14.8 VDC, any more and it is non-op.
