I do use a battery tender but was wondering if anyone has heard of one catching fire. I'm not one for leaving things plugged in especially when out of town. Are they pretty safe plugged in long term??
Mine have been plugged in 24/7 for the last 2 years (haven't been able to ride).

I've been using them for 15 years or so and no problems to date!
I've got the HD tender with the LED. I plug it in once the LED comes on showing the battery charge at 75%. LED only comes on in the summer if I don't ride for a week or 2. You can also plug an HD auxiliary power port into it when not using it to charge. (my dealer sells all his bikes with them pre-installed, winter storage up here)
battery tenders ONLY work IF the battery is fully charged. get a charger/maintainer one from wallmart.
also batterystuff.com is about $100.00 w/free shipping.

Most batteries are fully charged unless you have a major problem with them or your charging system on your bike, a battery tender Jr is $40 and works to maintain any battery that is in good order, when I'm not riding bike, ATV they are plugged in to one. I usually don't shop in Wally world unless I want cheap Chinese toilet paper or licorice.

That is not true for the three I own! They will charge a battery from part-discharged as well keep it topped up when the vehicle is not in use. A badly discharged battery will certainly benefit from a normal charger.

GR is correct. That's why they call it a "smart CHARGER".

I beg to differ also. I have ran my battery down from listening to the radio a couple of times, plug in the tender, let it sit overnight and BAM, charged again, good to go. Its called a SMART CHARGER for a reason.
