On hot pipes, I would think that the soapy water boiling could be mistaken for a bubbling exhaust leak. This must also have a finite window for when it works.
With the bike idling, put on a pair of thick work gloves and cover the ends of the mufflers as tightly as you can. If you have a leak, you may be able to hear it hissing. An old school Indy wrench I know recommended the toilet paper method. On the lines of the cigarette smoke thing; I've never done it personally, but I read this on here. Aside from just watching the smoke, which may be hard to do, if you get a lit incense stick close to the leak, the cherry will actually glow brighter as the air from the leak hits it. That's all I got. Good luck.
If youve got an old garden hose cut three or four feet off the end. Hold one end to your ear. It works wonders. At the same time try and have someone cover the end of the pipe(s). Its not absolutely necessary though but itll help.
