I just got the RK last week. Bike is awesome, except for the exhaust. The previous owner put on a Thunderheader with the heat shield wrap. It looks fugly and doesn't sound good to my ears, so I'm looking to replace it.
I'd like something that give a nice deep bass rumble, but is not much louder than stock if possible (need to keep the peace w/the neighbors). I've listened to as many sound clips as I could find, but didn't really find much mainly because the sound quality on most of the clips is crap.
I realize that exhaust sound is totally subjective to the rider's perception. Even so, can anyone here recommend a system that fits the bill?
Give us an idea of what you would like style wise: complete new system, stock pipes with mufflers, true duals, 2-into-1. We can't go through the entire World catalogue of Harley exhausts, or we will all be here forever!
The Road King is an excellent bike, welcome to the Forums and enjoy the ride. Yeah, and give us more specifics on the type of exhaust as others have said.
Let me know if you want to sell the ThunderHeader assuming it's chrome with all shields. Mine is kind of worn looking. Does it have the falsie pipe or just the 2 into 1?
It would be a complete new system, headers and all.
I looked through the Harley parts catalog, but all the SE stuff is for the newer bikes, so looks like that's out.
You can fit anything, stock Harley or aftermarket, up to 08. I have an 08 SuperTrapp system on my 1990 Glide, below. You could consider buying a recent factory set of headers secondhand, then add a pair of S&S SPO mufflers, they make an 80dB 'quiet' version. There's a set of '05 stock pipes on Ebay at present.
I added a photo to my previous post. The Thunderheader is all black with heat shield wrap. Absolutely butt-ugly.
Agreed and happy to help you get rid of it! Take a look at my Supermegs below. Works extremely well and comes with replaceable discs, so it can be tuned for noise, power/torque. I love it! I have all the discs in that it came with (I also have an S&S 107" motor), so it may be louder than you would like, but you are empowered to adjust that yourself!
