I use a kick stand pad on soft surfaces. I tied a string to it and hook the other end to the handlebars. When I put the kickstand up I pull the pad up and put it in the left lower fairing pocket. It's always there for soft surfaces.

The string also helps when you park. You can maneuver the pad under the kickstand without bending over.

I think it's defective, sounds like a warranty issue to me.
